Sometimes, people so badly want to succeed. Yet fear holds them back from taking any action.
Let me tell you my story. A true story...
It was a warm morning, and we were running late. We had to walk along this trail to reach a station on a mountain.
There was a young boy a few feet ahead of us, and as he walked we saw a horse on the side of the trail. It was feeding on some grass, and its tail was swishing the flies above the path.
As the young boy neared the rear of the horse, an adult behind us shouted...
"Bata, mag-ingat ka! Baka sipain ka nung kabayo!"
(Hey, kid! Be careful! That horse might kick you!)
That's when we noticed the large and powerful legs of the full-grown horse. A sudden kick while you're walking behind it can seriously injure you.
Should we walk slowly and quietly? Or should we just run quickly along the grassless path behind that strong horse?
The boy froze.
And all of us adults just stood there, behind the boy, with no one making any move.
The horse just continued munching on the grass, when it suddenly let loose a noisy and powerful gushing stream of hot yellow liquid which rushed towards our unmoving feet.
Like cowards, we simply stared at the golden water threatening to soak our muddy shoes.
After a few seconds, the young boy's older brother caught up with us and wondered why no one was moving.
"Bakit ka nakatunganga diyan?"
(Why are you just standing there?)
"Baka kasi sipain ako nung kabayo."
(The horse might kick me.)
"Eh di sipain mo rin!"
(Then go and kick the horse back, too!)
With those words of wisdom, plus a sharp thwack on the back of the head, the young boy walked forward, together with his annoyed older brother.
The horse ignored them, and the rest of us adults nervously shuffled along the trail, wondering if the horse would choose to kick us instead.
The horse just continued eating the grass, and we moved towards the next station on that mountain in Laguna.
When we were a safe distance from the horse, we looked back at the still feeding horse and laughed at how scared we were. If it weren't for that young boy's older brother, we might have stayed stuck there for hours.
